The interaction rate relates the responses to a publication with the size of the audience you take as a reference. There is no single official formula valid for all reports. You must indicate which interactions you include and what the denominator is. Without these two pieces of information, saying that an account has “5% engagement” is ambiguous.
By reach: (Likes + comments + saved + shared) ÷ accounts reached × 100. Used to compare the response between people who had the opportunity to see that publication.
By followers: (Likes + comments + saved + shares) ÷ followers × 100. It can be used to follow an account over time, but it includes people who may never have seen the piece and is distorted if the number of followers changes.
Example: a post receives 80 likes, 10 comments, 20 saved and 10 shares. Total 120 interactions. If you reached 2,000 accounts, the reach rate is 6%. If the account has 5,000 followers, the follower rate is 2.4%. Both figures are correct for different denominators; they should not be compared as if they were the same metric.

Instagram statistics show different metrics depending on format, account type, and platform changes. If you can't see saves or shares for a piece, indicate that the calculation only uses likes and comments. For Stories, replies or clicks can be more useful than a formula designed for feed posts. For Reels, add view time and profile views when available.
Compare publications of the same format, objective and period. A tutorial intended to be saved can have fewer comments than a question, and still help your customers more. Watch a series of five to ten pieces and use the median so that an exceptional video does not distort the reading. Avoid universal thresholds of “good” or “bad” without context.
Separates valuable interactions from noise. If you sell a service, a message asking for a quote or a visit to the contact page can matter more than a hundred likes. Add a column with the objective of each post and another with the subsequent action. This way you will know if the interaction brings you closer to a real result.
Record date, post URL, format, topic, reach, likes, comments, saved, shared and business action. Always calculate the rate with the same formula. Review posts after a comparable interval, such as a week. Note what you changed: theme, opening or format. If you modify everything at once, you won't know what helped.
Buying followers can make the follower rate appear lower without changing the real interest of the audience. Buying likes can inflate the numerator without creating customers. None of those numbers alone prove that content works. Instagram discourages artificial collection of interactions; Check their rules before making decisions based on those figures.
